Classes

At McGrath Academy of Irish Dance we offer a number of different dance programs:

Solo Dancing: Beginning dancers are welcome at any level starting at age 4. Classes are conducted by dance level starting with beginners and moving through the Championship level. Dancers move up levels by completing at feis and winning their competitions. Adult classes are offered as well.

Figures: In Figure dancing teams come together in groups of 4 and 8, single-sex and coed teams, to learn the footwork and arm movements of traditional ceili dances. Students enjoy the camaraderie of group dancing and learning this beautiful traditional dance form.

Drama: In Irish Dance drama groups of between 8-20 students perform on stage using a lively blend of theatre and Irish Dance to tell a story. McGrath is proud to have claimed the 2022 World Championship trophy and looks forward to future competitions.

Classes are scheduled in different locations during the week in the evenings and on weekends.

Registration for the 2023-2024 Year is now OPEN! https://dancestudio-pro.com/online/mcgrath

FEIS 101 sheet

There are no clothing requirements for dance classes except for shoes. There are two types of shoes in Irish Dance: soft and hard shoes. Soft shoes are known as “ghilles” for girls and “reel” shoes for boys. Beginners will start in soft shoes. As dancers progress, they will move into hard shoes as well.

Shoes can be purchased at Les Gals Dancewear, 2337 Distribution Circle, Silver Spring, MD, 301-60803237 or Irish Walk, 415 King Street, Alexandria, VA, 703-548-0118. You can also purchase shoes at local feiseanna at the vendor booths.

Sizing can be difficult, so it is recommended that you buy your first pair of shoes in person where you can try them on.

Costumes are worn by students who are competing. Beginners start out in a traditional school costume that can be purchased from the school. Girls’ solo dresses can be purchased as they move up in competition. Boys solo costumes consist of pants and a decorated vest and/or tie.
